Los Angeles Wedding Photographers Will & Naomi Henshall
WedFog - Tell us a bit about yourself.
Henshall's - We're a married couple, we're both photographers and we love shooting together! Our mission is to produce unique wedding and boudoir albums that combine editorial-style photojournalism, classic portraiture and out of focus grainy fine-art wackiness with the look and feel of contemporary media images like those portrayed around us in our everyday lives.
WedFog - Tell us how you got started with wedding photography.
Henshall's - A few years ago we took our cameras to a wedding that we were attending as guests. (We also have a commercial photography studio specializing in food photography, in fact Will just finished a new cook book with ICA Chef of the Year Joanne Purnell). We had so much fun shooting the event and the photos came out much better than the pro our friends had hired. Folk that saw the shots then asked us to shoot more weddings and it snowballed from there! Our wedding and boudoir photography business started properly in 2003 with the slogan "We shoot LOVE SEX and FOOD!" - ie fabulous weddings, sexy boudoir and yummy food...
WedFog - If we were hiring a wedding photographer today, why would we hire you?
Henshall's -We are experienced, reliable, professional, respectful of our client's personal space and most importantly, we are fabulous fun to work with! We are particularly well known for making folk feel at ease who are not used to having a camera pointed at them. We hope the quality of our work speaks for itself!
WedFog - What is your favorite part of the wedding day and why?
Henshall's - Every wedding is unique - that's why we love doing this so much, but there are generally the same big emotional moments when the groom sees his bride for the first time, when the bride's dad gives his daughter away and when the couple have their first kiss as man and wife. It's hard to shoot sometimes when your eyes are welling up with tears!
WedFog - Name two of your favorite venues or locations to shoot and tell us why you like working there.
Henshall's - Wow this is a hard question! Southern California has some truly spectacular venues. If we are pushed to choose, we would have to say the Sunset Restaurant on Zuma Beach in Malibu - the ultimate beach sunset wedding setting. And then for sheer fairy tale magic Calamigos Ranch in Malibu Canyon is like being in a twinkly sparkly hidden garden. You almost expect to see elves dancing around in the twilight!
WedFog - Care to share some of your favorite photos with us?
Henshall's - This was a traditional Greek wedding with 400 guests! This was a special moment in the limo on the way to the cathedral. The bride was so happy and her mom and dad were SO proud of her. What was particularly interesting about this wedding was that Dad gave us very specific instructions that we had to get REALLY close to the couple in the church to get all the action on camera. So we found ourselves literally standing on the altar next to the bride and groom and got some quite beautiful shots as a result. Generally we like to be as un-intrusive as possible during the ceremonies, shooting with longer lenses and not unnecessarily moving around or being obviously visible, so this was a strange feeling for us!
Henshall's - It’s all about the light! And southern California has an amazing late afternoon golden hour. Here we are at Los Angeles Union station with a super glamorous just married couple, just before they entered their reception. This shot was not set up. It was a moment that happened that we made sure we were in the right place to capture.
Henshall's - The most fun wedding party we have ever shot! The groom and his guys were a fabulous collection of actors, performance artists and film makers. The bridal party was just as crazy too. Shot in the lobby at the Figueroa Hotel in downtown LA. As we were setting up to do these photos 3 huge bus loads of Japanese tourists appeared from nowhere and started taking pictures. It was an insane moment, and the look on the guys faces here reflect this!
WedFog - Any words of wisdom for the brides to be?
Henshall's - Make your special day truly your own. It's a celebration of the two of you. Ensure everything you choose to do feels right to you. Don't compromise too much on what family members expect. Just because tradition dictates certain things should be done in certain ways doesn't mean you have to do them. If you want to show up wearing a red mini dress and high heeled pumps on the back of your Maid of Honor's Harley, then you go girl! Seriously though, it's all about being authentic and following your hearts. Oh, and hire the best hair and make up artist you can find. This really makes a difference!
